Using a scraping plane

A planed finish is always preferable, but on wood that tears out a scraping plane gives a fine final surface. It can take a little practice. Start without a burr: sharpen the blade like a plane blade and it will cut very well.

Lie-Nielsen scraping planes have thick blades with a 45° bevel that are easy to sharpen. They are soft enough to burnish yet hard enough to hold an edge. Sharp, properly set and used with light strokes, they leave a finished surface on the most difficult hardwoods.
