Seamless steel can also be obtained or manufactured in shapes other than rectangular. A sickling can be used for convex or concave surfaces. The edge of a sickling is first filed at 90° to the flat surface and then a sickling steel is drawn towards the edge at an angle of about 30° or as required to produce a graduated edge.

Fine carvers use a sickling after sanding with abrasive paper to obtain the final finish, and when working with a hand plane, sickling may be preferable to subsequent sanding.
