What is chip carving?
Chip carving is decorative woodcarving in geometric patterns. The cuts are made with a very sharp knife or with dedicated chip carving knives, as wide, deep grooves with smooth sloping faces.
The simplest patterns are triangles and nail cuts, and the classic rosette whose petals are drawn with arcs dividing the circle into six. Chip carving can be very simple or highly elaborate, and the technique has a long tradition on boxes, mangle boards and spoons.
