We are not a big player in the world of quality tools; we are among the smallest. We can't order 100+ of one type of plane, or large quantities of other tools. I assume I'm not the only one who regularly checks how things look at Fine Tools, Dictum, Axminster and so on. It is clear that they haven't received the large deliveries they usually get from the manufacturers. They are just as sold out as we are, especially when it comes to planes. Dictum, for example, has removed the Lie-Nielsen products from its site entirely and only shows what it has in stock online. Highland Woodworking in the USA has done the same. We have chosen to keep all products online, even when sold out, since we do still receive things. And because we might order 5 instead of 50, we have actually had regular deliveries from most manufacturers this year. Last spring we received a delivery from LN that was (in our eyes) quite large, which let us sell from it for almost the whole of last year. Much of that delivery went to customers outside Sweden, which has increased our number of foreign customers considerably. We have had a couple more small deliveries, most recently last week, when a batch of tapered dovetail saws came in. Lie-Nielsen Tapered Dovetail Saw We'll see where they end up!
But like everyone else, we are waiting for LN to start delivering planes again. What Thomas Lie-Nielsen tells us is that they are working hard but are not quite at the point where they can deliver larger quantities to any dealer.
So the question is: when will the logjam clear? When will the shelves in Europe be full of planes again? Veritas keeps going, and we now get a delivery from them fairly regularly, once a month. It is never large, but it lets us build up stock again. For example, we now have enough honing guides to last quite a while, and router planes are in fairly good supply too. We have much of their other range in stock as well. We are always trying to expand the range, and this delivery brings their new short carbide burnisher. Veritas Carbide Burnisher, Short
We never know what will come in the deliveries from Veritas; it is decided only days before shipping. But they say they should be able to deliver ordered products within a three-month period, and many others quote the same.
We think (and hope) that deliveries will grow after the summer, and then stocks everywhere should fill up. It will be exciting to see whether the new customers we have gained will stay with us or go back to their previous shops.
We have had a long weekend off, celebrating a birthday and just trying to recharge. For those of you waiting for the new Lost Art Press books, they arrived while we were at home. We will ship the orders on Monday. And if you fancy reading some woodworking books, we have launched a new sister shop to our others. Snickeribokhandeln
If books are all you are after, you will find all our books there, sorted a little differently, by language. We will also list some rather unique books there: we have a fair number of older, mainly American, books that we will sell off going forward, and some new titles from other publishers and authors are coming too.
We have now received a larger quantity of the much-discussed book The Woodworker's Pocket Book. The Woodworker's Pocket Book
Those of you who have visited or shopped with us know we have a "corner room" where we kept LN and Veritas. We have emptied that room of tools, and it is now our new "textile/leather room". We have always wanted a proper space for clothing, and with our little rebuild we thought this room would be perfect for it. It is now finished: we have restocked sizes and updated the website. When we can receive visitors again, it will also be easier and nicer to feel and try on the clothes. We have high and low trousers in moleskin and black and brown corduroy, waistcoats in the same fabrics, a few moleskin jackets and 4 different aprons in fabric and leather. Everything is here: workwear
The table in that room is from Sjöbergs: their cutting and fabric table with the drawer insert. So if you are curious to see what it is like, we have one here. If you want to buy it or anything else from Sjöbergs' "school range", get in touch and we will sort it out.
Those of you who read the magazine Gör Det Själv may have seen our advert? We regularly advertise in various magazines, such as Hemslöjd. We have had Trend adverts in GDS before, and they asked if we would like a campaign over a couple of spring and summer issues, which we thought could be fun. The first advert is in the latest issue, which should have come out this week. We hope you like it! :)
Other things on the way include several more Naniwa sharpening stones. We are filling in the remaining grits, such as 220 and 3000, and we are also getting their more affordable combination stones.
We have also received nails from Tremont. cut nails We have changed things a little on the website: we now sell the nails individually. We think it is more logical for customers to choose how many nails they want, rather than automatically getting 100 as before. So if you only want 5–10 or 500, just enter that number at checkout.
As usual, you will find everything new on our "updated products" page: new products
We keep working on the website and think the speed of hyvlar.se is really good now. As it is our original shop, that is where most purchases come from. We use a so-called "multi-store" setup in our e-commerce software, which lets you use several domains with just one core shop. In our case rubank-verktygs.se is the main shop; all emails and so on come from it, and it is the one we normally link the newsletters to. In this email we have used hyvlar.se instead, so you get the fastest possible experience. We are working on getting the other domains up to the same speed, for example rubank.se, tools4wood.se, hoylat.fi, bushcraft-tools.se and, most recently, snickeribokhandeln.se. The idea is that the different shops can have slightly different ranges: tools4wood, for example, has Trend's entire range, while hyvlar.se only has what we keep in stock. But prices are always the same everywhere; we make no distinction based on where you shop, unlike others with similar setups.
We hope everyone has a lovely spring. Take care, and we will be in touch again soon.
