Chip carving is one of the very oldest wood carving techniques.
The technique was mainly used to decorate household objects. Wooden boxes, chairs and wedding gifts such as mangle boards were given rich patterns.
It is decorative carving with geometric patterns. Chip carving is often done with an ordinary, very sharp carving knife or with special chip carving knives, in wide, deep grooves with smooth, sloping cut faces.
The simplest chip cuts are triangular and nail cuts, and a rosette whose petals are drawn as arcs from the circumference of a circle with the same radius as the arcs, in other words the usual six-fold division of a circle. Chip carving can be done in very simple but also very elaborate geometric patterns.
Ron Hock has made his chip carving knives for almost 20 years. With bubinga handles they sit comfortably in the hand and are easy to work with. Since the blades also hold their edge well and are easy to sharpen, they are excellent value. If you want a good chip carving knife to start with, these are ideal! Hock also makes a stab knife for chip carving, and you will find more knives among our carving and craft tools.
