How to sharpen a card scraper

First file or hone the scraper edge square to the faces. Then run a burnisher along the edge, first flat against the faces and then at a slight angle, to turn a small burr. It is the burr that cuts. When the scraper stops producing shavings, turn the burr again, and after a few times file the edge fresh.

Furniture makers use the scraper for the final finish, often instead of sandpaper after planing. Curved and shaped scrapers are available for convex and concave surfaces and profiles.
