"Oh yes, we're still here," Tony at Joseph Marples replied when I got in touch. J. Marples is one of the classic English firms in Sheffield that has made tools since the 1840s (!), and they are still around today. It warms the tool-loving heart to see that small-scale, classic manufacturing and design still exist.
We are bringing in a sliding bevel, a try square and a mitre square, plus cabinet screwdrivers, all in a few different sizes. The design is more than 100 years old – I have an old try square that looks exactly like the newly made ones. The sliding bevel, try square and mitre square are all made of rosewood with brass faces and steel blades, and follow the British standard BS 3322 for tolerances.
The cabinet screwdrivers have lacquered beech handles and steel blades.
The handles are slightly oval and sit very comfortably in the hand.
