How a router plane works
A router plane has a sole with a blade in the middle that projects below it. The blade is set in small steps, so the bottom of a groove or housing ends up perfectly flat and at exactly the depth you want.
Blades come in different widths and shapes, with straight, pointed or skewed edges, to suit different work.
