The Naniwa Specialty Stone series is the improved version of the well-known Super Stone series. Naniwa has renewed the binding agent of the stones and produces it in-house, optimally matched to each grit size. As a result, Naniwa water stones sharpen significantly better than other brands of comparable grit. The stones are hard, so your edge is unlikely to bite into the stone, and wear is minimal, giving a very long lifespan. It is still advisable to clean the stone regularly with a dressing stone.
The stones are synthetic resin-bound and absorb very little water, so you only have to wet them to start sharpening immediately. They do not have to be submerged. The stone wears very slowly during sharpening, so it is, as it were, self-cleaning.
