Cleaning and rust protection for planes
Planes get dirty with use, but they are easy to keep in as-new condition. New Veritas planes arrive with a rust preventive that is removed with a cloth and methylated spirit or white spirit. Clean all machined surfaces, including the area around the mouth.
Then apply a thin coat of wax to keep moisture and rust away. The wax also makes the plane glide more easily, an old woodworker's tip. Jojoba oil also works as protection. Always wipe off shavings and dust after use before waxing, let the wax dry and buff with a dry, lint-free cloth. This also removes grease and dirt from your fingers, which is especially important on machined surfaces.
