Bench planes

The replacement blades for bench planes are 2.4 mm (3/32") thick, almost 20% thicker than standard. This gives a steadier cut and a better result. They are 178 mm (7") long with a 30° bevel and fit most vintage planes of the corresponding size. Because metal planes have been made for more than a century, dimensions vary, and the mouth sometimes needs slight opening to accept a thicker blade.

Block planes

Block plane blades are 3.2 mm (1/8") thick with a 25° bevel and have slots for the adjuster. Measure the width to find the right one: either 1 3/8" (low-angle, 60 1/2 type) or 1 5/8" (standard, 9 1/2 type). British Record and Stanley planes with lateral adjustment use 5/8" slot spacing with three slots, planes without lateral adjustment 7/16", and older American Stanley block planes have eight slots.
