The problem with planers is that they need cleaning after use. They inevitably get dirty. One consolation is that it is quite easy to maintain them so they stay in like-new condition!

Veritas planers are made of ductile iron and come rust-proofed. You can remove this with a cloth and methylated spirit or white spirit. Make sure to have all machined surfaces cleaned, including the one under/ in front of the chip opening, depending on the model you have.

The recommendation is to apply a thin layer of wax to keep out moisture and rust. This can be repeated at regular intervals, this has the other advantage that the waxing makes planing easier - this is an old tip used by old carpenters. Jojoba oil is also suitable as a shadow, in our maintenance kit there is oil and two cloths to use for this.

Make sure to wipe away any chips and dust left after planing/use before waxing and waxing thin. Let it dry and then wipe with a dry lint-free cloth. Drying also removes some of the dirt that always sticks to the tool from your fingers. This is especially important for planers with machined surfaces.
