Can I apply milk paint over a painted or varnished surface?

Milk paint adheres best to bare, porous wood, where it soaks in and bonds very well. On painted, varnished or oiled surfaces the paint has more difficulty adhering and can flake.

If you are painting a previously finished surface, sand off as much of the old finish as possible and make a test patch first. Some people use the flaking on purpose to get a worn, antique effect (chippy look). Milk paint can also be layered in several colours and sanded through for patina.
