Clean holes with spurs
Bits with a centre point and spurs give very clean, neat holes. A useful tip is to run the bit in reverse briefly at the start so the spurs score the rim, then drill as normal.
Jennings auger bits
Jennings-pattern auger bits are sometimes called double-twist bits. Russell Jennings received his US patent in 1855. Unlike the Irwin pattern, for example, the Jennings bit has two spirals running the full length, which gives a very straight, clean hole. The bits have a square tang for the brace.
