Cutting angle and secondary bevel

Lie-Nielsen block planes have the blade bedded at 12° and ground with a 25° bevel, giving a cutting angle of 37°. This works well for end grain and general work. In difficult or figured woods, a higher cutting angle gives better results.

The simple way to raise the cutting angle on a low angle plane is to hone a steeper bevel. A 33° bevel gives a 45° cutting angle and a 38° bevel gives 50°. A small secondary bevel is enough; there is no need to regrind the whole bevel.
