Side-clamping or top-clamping?

There are two main types of honing guide: side-clamping, which holds the blade by its edges, and top-clamping, which clamps on the top face. One guide rarely does everything, so it can be worth having one of each to cover both narrow blades such as chisels and plough plane irons, and wider blades for block and smoothing planes.
