While this small plane can be used as is, it was designed to be inset into a wooden plane body that you make. This lets you adapt the size, shape and function of the finished tool to suit your work type and preferred grip.

About the size of a finger plane, it can be used to create a small smooth plane or edge plane but is particularly useful for making a chamfer plane tailored to a specific width or angle.

Fitting neatly into a 1-11/16" x 3/4" mortise, the cast stainless-steel body has a linished sole, a 45° bed angle and a fixed mouth. A brass retention screw secures the included 30° bevel A2 tool steel blade (0.06" thick by 15/32" wide). Notches along the sides of the body permit mechanical glue lock.

Instructions are included for creating a basic wooden body as well as chamfer guides. Used alone, the inset plane makes fine, controlled cuts. A simple way to craft a unique plane.

For children and in school woodwork you need a small plane that is light and fits a smaller hand. Two good choices are:

Veritas Little Victor block plane – a small block plane that is easy to hold and adjust
Veritas inset plane (05P91.01) – a very small plane that also suits finer detail work

Remember that even a small plane needs a sharp blade to be enjoyable, so sharpen it before the children start.

Which plane to start with depends on what you will do, but for most people a smoothing plane (No. 4) or a jack plane (No. 5) is a good first choice. The smoothing plane gives smooth surfaces, and the jack plane is a versatile plane for both rough work and truing edges.

Low-angle jack planes such as the Lie-Nielsen No. 62 and the Veritas low-angle jack are also popular all-round planes. A block plane is a good addition for end grain and chamfers. The guide explains how the hand plane is built and which types exist.

Planes of cast iron and steel rust easily, especially in unheated workshops and from moisture on your hands. Wipe the plane after use and protect bare surfaces with a thin layer of wax or oil that will not mark the wood.

Store your planes dry, ideally in a plane sock or box. If rust has already formed, the guide shows how to clean and protect them.
