Milk paint dries to a matt, porous surface that can show water marks and wear. A finish protects the paint and deepens the colour:

Pure tung oil or hemp seed oil – penetrates, deepens the colour and gives good water protection
Wax – a soft sheen and a fine feel, but needs renewing
Oil Wax (Sweet Pickings) – durable and water-repellent, one coat is enough
Finishing Cream – a water-based protective finish that does not change the colour, gloss, satin or dead flat

Oil and oil wax make the colour slightly warmer and can yellow slightly on white surfaces. If you want to keep a light colour exactly, Finishing Cream is a good choice.

Yes, milk paint works well on toys. However, the paint scratches off easily, so you need to add a protective coat on top, such as oil, wax or lacquer. Our oils and waxes work well for this.

Danish oil is pleasant to use, but it needs topping up with fresh oil now and then.

A tip is to paint with two colours. As the top coat wears, the colour underneath shows through, which gives a nice look on toys that get a lot of use.
