You soon see how many kinds of smoothing planes there are when you browse flea markets and buy-and-sell sites, and of course our website, where you will find smoothing planes from several different makers. A smoothing plane is short, from about 14 cm for the little No. 1 to about 25 cm for the larger No. 4 1/2.
Which size should you choose? That naturally depends on what you do or plan to do, and which planes you already have. Generally speaking, a No. 3 or No. 4 suits most people, and it is probably something you already have! But sometimes you want to upgrade to a really good smoothing plane, and then we can recommend one of the smoothing planes from Veritas or Lie-Nielsen in our range.
With a smoothing plane you can level a surface or, set coarse, use it almost like a small scrub plane to remove a lot of material quickly.
