The high-carbon O1 tool steel in these blades, the same steel used in Hock plane blades for decades, makes a superior cutting tool in the kitchen. You will appreciate how easily it sharpens and how sharp it gets.
As the blade is high-carbon steel, it will discolor and take on a patina. A little care helps prevent corrosion: wash and dry after each use and never put it in the dishwasher. Sharpened often and lightly, the knife will perform well for generations.
The blade is sold without handle but includes three steel pins for attaching the scales.
The blade is 1/8" thick. To build the knife you need a drill press with a 1/4" bit, a bandsaw, jigsaw or coping saw, two or three clamps and ideally a belt sander, plus two pieces of handle material about 1/4" × 1 1/4" × 5" and slow-setting epoxy. The handle wood should be hard, tight-grained and well seasoned, or stabilized.
