Veritas box-maker's plow plane, left-hand. An ideal tool for grooves in boxes and small drawers, this compact plow plane excels at precise grooving and beading on small workpieces.

With a 5 1/2" long cast-iron body and weighing just 1 lb 7 oz, it is highly maneuverable and comfortable to use. It comes with a 1/4" wide lapped A2 tool steel blade and works with any Veritas plow plane blade from 1/8" to 3/8" wide (or metric 4-10 mm), including the three imperial beading blades, all available separately. A brass knob secures the blade from the side for vertical alignment with the skate, and another holds it from the top to lock the depth setting.

The 5" fence has a torrefied maple face fitted to a cast-iron base on double guide rods. It can offset a groove up to 2 1/2" from the edge, and a small recess in the wooden face lets you cut rabbets narrower than the blade. The ergonomic design keeps the plane firmly registered with a comfortable, natural grip. For wide boards, the wooden fence can be replaced with a larger shop-made extension.

The adjustable shoe acts as a depth stop for cuts up to 3/8" deep. It has relieved edges to avoid marking the work and locks with a knurled brass knob.

The plane has a 45° blade bed and a body sculpted to fit the palm. This is the left-hand version (also available right-hand). Although the choice is often based on your dominant hand, neither model is exclusively for right- or left-handed users. They are complementary, since having both lets you handle any grain direction.

Additional imperial or metric blades are available separately, individually or in sets. Blades 1/4" (6 mm) or wider work in either version; for blades 3/16" (5 mm) or narrower, choose handed blades to match the plane. Made in Canada.

No, Veritas does not recommend it, which is why beading blades and other profile blades are not listed as compatible with the Box Maker's Plow Plane.

The likely reason is the shape of the plane. It is designed for straight blades only and has no room for the extra width of the profile blades. You could probably get them in, but it is not something we recommend.

If you want to cut beads or other profiles, the Veritas small plow plane or combination plane is a better choice.

Which plane to start with depends on what you will do, but for most people a smoothing plane (No. 4) or a jack plane (No. 5) is a good first choice. The smoothing plane gives smooth surfaces, and the jack plane is a versatile plane for both rough work and truing edges.

Low-angle jack planes such as the Lie-Nielsen No. 62 and the Veritas low-angle jack are also popular all-round planes. A block plane is a good addition for end grain and chamfers. The guide explains how the hand plane is built and which types exist.

A shoulder plane and a rebate plane both have a blade that reaches the edges, but they are used for different tasks. The shoulder plane is narrow and precise and is used to trim tenon shoulders and adjust joints, often on end grain. The rebate plane often has a fence and depth stop and is used to cut rebates along an edge.

The guide explains when to choose which.

Planes of cast iron and steel rust easily, especially in unheated workshops and from moisture on your hands. Wipe the plane after use and protect bare surfaces with a thin layer of wax or oil that will not mark the wood.

Store your planes dry, ideally in a plane sock or box. If rust has already formed, the guide shows how to clean and protect them.
