Veritas miniature shooting plane, right-hand. Only 5 5/16" long with a 3/4" wide blade, it is a fully functional 1:3-scale version of the Veritas right-hand shooting plane. A superb tool for precisely trimming smaller stock to length, from picture framing to kumiko and similarly fine work.

The body is stainless steel, machined and ground with a sole and running surface accurately flat and square to one another. The 0.71" wide running surface fits exactly in the track of the Veritas miniature shooting board (sold separately or paired with the plane).

The bed is skewed 20° to reduce cutting resistance and give a shearing cut that leaves a clean end-grain finish. Combined with the 12° bed angle and 25° blade bevel, the effective cutting angle is 36°. Weighing just over 5 oz, the plane has a walnut tote and a Norris-style mechanism combining feed and lateral adjustment for precise setting of the 0.060" thick A2 blade.

Supplied in an embossed, French-fitted presentation box. Made in Canada.

Yes. Veritas miniature tools always come with the blade fitted, and there is no other blade to choose. The product description tells you which steel the blade is made of.

On the full-size Veritas planes, such as the Veritas right-hand shooting plane, you choose the blade yourself, unless the product page says otherwise.

Which plane to start with depends on what you will do, but for most people a smoothing plane (No. 4) or a jack plane (No. 5) is a good first choice. The smoothing plane gives smooth surfaces, and the jack plane is a versatile plane for both rough work and truing edges.

Low-angle jack planes such as the Lie-Nielsen No. 62 and the Veritas low-angle jack are also popular all-round planes. A block plane is a good addition for end grain and chamfers. The guide explains how the hand plane is built and which types exist.

Planes of cast iron and steel rust easily, especially in unheated workshops and from moisture on your hands. Wipe the plane after use and protect bare surfaces with a thin layer of wax or oil that will not mark the wood.

Store your planes dry, ideally in a plane sock or box. If rust has already formed, the guide shows how to clean and protect them.
