Veritas-Barron dovetail saw guide, 1:7 slope.
The guide is made of anodised aluminium. Recessed rare-earth magnets covered by a low-friction coating keep the saw blade aligned during the cut. A replaceable high-friction layer where the guide meets the workpiece holds it in place without clamps, so it can be repositioned quickly between cuts. It is designed for use with a quality Japanese dozuki, and joints can be fitted straight off the saw without trimming pins or tails. It works on both pins and tails, in through and half-blind dovetails.
The Veritas-Barron guide is a licensed modification of the Veritas patent by British master craftsman David Barron. The same series includes guides in 1:4, 1:5, 1:6, 1:7 and 1:8 slopes as well as 90° and 45° (mitre), each sold separately.
Which handsaw to choose depends on the tooth pattern and the number of teeth per inch (tpi). Rip teeth cut along the grain and crosscut teeth across it. Few teeth give fast but rough cuts, and many teeth give slower, cleaner cuts.
Backsaws such as tenon saws and dovetail saws are used for precise joinery. The guide covers tooth patterns, sharpening and choosing a saw.
