The Veritas dowel maker lets you make perfectly sized dowels from any wood species you wish, from 1/4" to 1" diameter in 1/16" increments and up to 4' long (or longer in the larger diameters).
The Veritas dowel maker lets you make perfectly sized dowels from any wood species you wish, from 1/4" to 1" diameter in 1/16" increments and up to 4' long (or longer in the larger diameters). Commonly available dowel rod is made by an imprecise milling process and comes in a limited number of sizes and woods.
The process uses two blades of highly wear-resistant A2 tool steel, one for roughing and the other for final sizing. You rip square stock 1/8" oversize and drive it through the dowel maker using a square socket drive in an electric drill. Set the two blades for the size you want, make a short section of dowel and then adjust the finishing blade to bring the dowel to exact size. The fine adjustment is needed since woods of different densities have different fiber springback when cut.
The body is cast and anodized aluminum with micrometer adjustment in both blade-fixing mechanisms. The blades can be set to make dowel as much as 1/16" undersize (often an advantage when you want a sliding fit), so a 1/16" undersize guide bushing is included. A simple jig for precise replacement of blades after sharpening is also included. The body can be held in a vise, bolted to a bench, or anchored through a 3/4" dog hole using the optional dog assembly.
The basic dowel maker is drilled to make 1" dowel. Inserts for other sizes are available separately.
Includes:
Body with two blades
1 1/8" square socket drive with drive adapter
1" and 15/16" guide bushings
Wrench and hex keys
Blade setting jig
The Veritas Dowel Maker Master set already includes the insert set (Dowel Maker Insert Set), so you do not need to buy it separately.
The Dowel Inserts for Arrow Makers are not included. The master set is discounted, so it is better value than buying the Basic Dowel Maker and the insert set separately.

How often items are restocked depends on the supplier. We receive deliveries from Veritas about once a month, Lie-Nielsen ships in batches and we order from Incra about once a year. You can also add the item to a wishlist in your account, where you can see whether it is in stock.
