Veritas wheel marking gauge with micro-adjust, closely modelled on an antique tool in the Lee Valley collection. The original was made by the E.P. Johnson Rule Co., likely around the turn of the 20th century, though its exact age is hard to determine. It is a reliable way to transfer and mark measurements quickly and precisely.
It has a two-stage adjustment: a traveller that anchors the head assembly to the shaft, and a fine-adjust knob that moves the head relative to the traveller. A full turn moves the head 0.024" (less than 1/32").
The hardened steel wheel cutter slices fibres rather than tearing them, leaving a clear line even across the grain. It retracts into the face for safe storage and is bevelled on one side only, pulling the 1 3/4" face against the work for accuracy. The shaft is 7 7/8" long.
A clever design that works well. Made in Canada from investment-cast and machined stainless steel.
