Lee Valley round spokeshave, a close replica of model 1374 by Edward Preston & Sons, founded in 1825 and one of the finest toolmakers of the Victorian age. It is as elegant as it is effective.

Smaller than typical spokeshaves at 6 3/4" overall, it is designed for fine smoothing and shaping, with a tight mouth to reduce tear-out and a 5/8" radius sole for tight curves. The handles are raised to keep your hands clear of the work.

As with any round-bottomed spokeshave, it takes some practice to hold it on its sweet spot, where the blade and the leading and trailing edges of the mouth are in steady contact with the stock. Investment cast in stainless steel, it reproduces the polished scrollwork and scalloped borders of the original and is hand polished. The blade bed is not machined after casting, faithful to the original and without affecting performance.

The blade, however, is modern: 1 3/8" wide and 3/32" thick in PM-V11, with a 30° bevel, clamped with a thumbscrew and cap iron. Made in Canada.

Which plane to start with depends on what you will do, but for most people a smoothing plane (No. 4) or a jack plane (No. 5) is a good first choice. The smoothing plane gives smooth surfaces, and the jack plane is a versatile plane for both rough work and truing edges.

A block plane is a good addition for end grain and chamfers. The guide explains how the hand plane is built and which types exist.

Planes of cast iron and steel rust easily, especially in unheated workshops and from moisture on your hands. Wipe the plane after use and protect bare surfaces with a thin layer of wax or oil that will not mark the wood.

Store your planes dry, ideally in a plane sock or box. If rust has already formed, the guide shows how to clean and protect them.
