Both Real Milk Paint and Sweet Pickings come as a powder that you mix yourself with water, in the ratio 1 part powder to 1 part water:

Pour the water into a jar and add the powder
Stir or shake thoroughly until smooth
Let it stand for a few minutes and stir again
Thin with a little water if you want a wash or a thinner first coat

Mix only as much as you will use, as mixed milk paint keeps for a limited time. If the paint foams, you can add Real Milk Paint anti-foam, which also makes pigments that tend to float on the water easier to mix.

Milk paint dries to a matt, porous surface that can show water marks and wear. A finish protects the paint and deepens the colour:

Pure tung oil or hemp seed oil – penetrates, deepens the colour and gives good water protection
Wax – a soft sheen and a fine feel, but needs renewing
Oil Wax (Sweet Pickings) – durable and water-repellent, one coat is enough
Finishing Cream – a water-based protective finish that does not change the colour, gloss, satin or dead flat

Oil and oil wax make the colour slightly warmer and can yellow slightly on white surfaces. If you want to keep a light colour exactly, Finishing Cream is a good choice.

Milk paint adheres best to bare, porous wood, where it soaks in and bonds very well. On painted, varnished or oiled surfaces the paint has more difficulty adhering and can flake.

If you are painting a previously finished surface, sand off as much of the old finish as possible and make a test patch first. Some people use the flaking on purpose to get a worn, antique effect (chippy look). Milk paint can also be layered in several colours and sanded through for patina.

A 1 quart package of Real Milk Paint makes about 0.95 litres of ready milk paint, which covers about 3.3 m² with two coats. A pint (0.47 litres) covers about half that.

Coverage depends on the surface: bare, porous wood absorbs more paint than a sanded, dense surface. Since you only mix the amount you need, you can keep the rest of the powder for the next project, so it is better to buy a little too much than too little.

Milk paint, also called casein paint, is a traditional paint made from milk protein, lime and pigment. It comes as a powder that you mix with water, roughly equal parts, to the consistency you want. Only mix what you will use, since the paint keeps for a couple of days.

On bare wood it bonds well and gives a matt finish. The guide shows how to mix and paint.
