Thomas Flinn Centenary dovetail saw, 8", 20 tpi rip, with open rosewood handle. This special edition celebrates Thomas Flinn's 100 years of manufacturing in Sheffield, England. Founder Thomas Flinn started making saws in 1923 in a small workshop in Sheffield's industrial quarter. In 1936 the business was bought by his apprentice Frank Ellis, whose family still owns it.
The saw has a heavy folded brass back with a satin finish for the right weight and balance, laser-engraved with the centenary dates. The blade is hand sharpened for the best cutting performance, and the rosewood handle has a special 100-year medallion and traditional split-nut screws. Limited run, while the wood lasts.
Saw type: Dovetail saw (backsaw)
Which handsaw to choose depends on the tooth pattern and the number of teeth per inch (tpi). Rip teeth cut along the grain and crosscut teeth across it. Few teeth give fast but rough cuts, and many teeth give slower, cleaner cuts.
Backsaws such as tenon saws and dovetail saws are used for precise joinery. The guide covers tooth patterns, sharpening and choosing a saw.
