Tormek AX-40 axe jig, which lets you make virtually any axe extremely sharp. The composite jaws close securely around the axe head for simple, symmetrical and precise sharpening. It fits all kinds of axes, from hatchets and carpenter's axes to carving axes and broad axes, and works with the Tormek T-8, T-4 and older models.

You can sharpen convex, flat or concave bevels to suit the axe and its use. Each jaw has two stops; moving between them in a controlled way gives a convex bevel. Using just one stop as reference gives a slightly hollow grind. For a completely flat bevel, sharpen on the side of a diamond grinding wheel using the MB-102 Multi Base.

Outdoor and carving axes usually have a curved edge, while splitting mauls and carpenter's axes have an almost straight one. As the stops are rounded, it is easy to follow the edge shape, straight or curved, for consistent bevels on all your axes.

With the WM-200 AngleMaster you are free to choose the best angle for your axe. An all-round outdoor axe has a bigger edge angle than a carving axe to withstand more force, and a splitting maul needs an even bigger one. Carving axes can be sharpened asymmetrically, with a smaller angle and larger bevel on the left for a right-handed user, so the axe cuts and carves more easily.

The jig also gives great freedom of position: sharpen edge trailing or edge leading, standing or sitting on either side of the machine.

The jigs are usually not included with the machine; you choose them by the tools you want to sharpen. All jigs fit both the T-4 and the T-8:

SE-77 – chisels and plane blades with a straight or slightly cambered edge
KJ-45 and KJ-140 – centring knife jigs for symmetrical bevels
SVD-186R – turning gouges, carving gouges and V-tools
SVS-50 – skew chisels, parting tools and carving tools
AX-40 – axes
SVX-150 and SC-60 – scissors
SVH-320 – planer blades
DBS-22 – twist drills 3–22 mm

The HTK-906 and TNT-808 kits collect the most common jigs for hand tools and woodturning respectively.

There are several good ways to sharpen chisels and plane irons: water stones, diamond stones, oil stones and sharpening machines such as Tormek. All give sharp edges, but they differ in speed, maintenance and price.

A honing guide makes it easier to keep the same angle every time. The most important thing is to find a method you enjoy and use often. The guide helps you choose.
