Pégas makes many types of scroll saw blade, and the choice depends mainly on the material:

Skip – a universal blade, very efficient in hard and medium-hard wood
Double Skip – a fast blade with good chip removal that does not burn, good for soft wood
Super Skip – aggressive but with a smooth finish, for hardwood and acrylic
Super Hook – for thick hardwood, cuts up to 76 mm of beech
Spiral – cuts in every direction without turning the work
Metal cutting – for thin metal up to 3 mm

Blades marked R (Reverse) give a cleaner underside.

An R after the number, for example 7R, means the scroll saw blade is a Reverse blade. It has the same tooth geometry as the matching standard blade, but with a few reverse teeth at the bottom.

The reverse teeth cut upwards and prevent the wood from splintering on the underside of the work. This gives a cleaner edge on both faces and works especially well in soft wood and plywood. Set the blade so the reverse teeth just reach above the table.

The number indicates the blade size. The higher the number, the thicker and wider the blade, with fewer teeth per inch. A Skip blade No. 2/0, for example, has 28 teeth per inch, No. 5 has 17 and No. 12 has 11.5.

Low numbers (2/0–3) suit thin material, veneer and tight curves. Middle numbers (4–7) are good all-round blades for 10–20 mm wood. High numbers (8–12) cut faster in thick and hard wood but cannot follow such tight curves.

It depends on your saw. Pinned scroll saw blades have cross pins at the ends and are used in saws that require them, such as coping saws and some hobby saws. The 3" blades with a 70 mm pin centre fit, among others, Dremel, Sears, Delta and Emco Lux.

Plain-end blades are used in most power scroll saws and in hand-held saw frames, and they can be threaded through a drilled hole for inside cuts.

Which handsaw to choose depends on the tooth pattern and the number of teeth per inch (tpi). Rip teeth cut along the grain and crosscut teeth across it. Few teeth give fast but rough cuts, and many teeth give slower, cleaner cuts.

Backsaws such as tenon saws and dovetail saws are used for precise joinery. The guide covers tooth patterns, sharpening and choosing a saw.
