Real Milk Paint anti-foam agent, a food-grade additive that reduces foam and improves the smoothness of the paint. Just like milk blended into a cappuccino, milk paint can develop a foamy head when strongly agitated, and anti-foam reduces or eliminates foaming and bubbling for easier mixing and application.
It also helps powder pigments disperse into the water. Some pigments, such as Salmon and Bright Red, tend to float on the water, making even mixing difficult. Anti-foam breaks the surface tension for faster mixing and the proper texture for application, and as a side benefit makes the paint smoother.
Both Real Milk Paint and Sweet Pickings come as a powder that you mix yourself with water, in the ratio 1 part powder to 1 part water:
Pour the water into a jar and add the powder
Stir or shake thoroughly until smooth
Let it stand for a few minutes and stir again
Thin with a little water if you want a wash or a thinner first coat
Mix only as much as you will use, as mixed milk paint keeps for a limited time. If the paint foams, you can add Real Milk Paint anti-foam, which also makes pigments that tend to float on the water easier to mix.
Milk paint, also called casein paint, is a traditional paint made from milk protein, lime and pigment. It comes as a powder that you mix with water, roughly equal parts, to the consistency you want. Only mix what you will use, since the paint keeps for a couple of days.
