M-Power SBS (Side by Side) freehand diamond sharpening station. Sharpening is a six-stage process: across three grades of durable monocrystalline diamond, then on three leather strops with three grades of polishing wax. The diamond surfaces can be easily and inexpensively replaced by the owner when worn, so the whole stone need not be thrown away.

Compared with a traditional double-sided 8" diamond stone, which must be turned, cleaned and reset in the holder between grades, the SBS sits on your bench with all three grades ready. Each stone has a magnetic leather strop cover, so you can strop straight after sharpening without moving from the job.

The base is CNC-machined, anodised aluminium, larger than the diamond surface for improved stability. Flatness is ±0.00175". The diamond surfaces are electroplated plates bonded with 3M adhesive to an aluminium core, and an interconnected recess pattern clears swarf. Each station is made in Salisbury, England, and passes 11 quality tests.

There are several good ways to sharpen chisels and plane irons: water stones, diamond stones, oil stones and sharpening machines such as Tormek. All give sharp edges, but they differ in speed, maintenance and price.

A honing guide makes it easier to keep the same angle every time. The most important thing is to find a method you enjoy and use often. The guide helps you choose.

Which water stone you need depends on how dull your edges are and how fine a finish you want. A common setup is a coarse stone around 1000 grit to shape the edge and a fine stone around 5000–8000 grit to polish it. For chipped edges you need a coarser stone too.

Water stones wear unevenly and need flattening regularly. The guide explains grits, brands and flattening.
