Niklas Karlsson is a professional craftsman specialising in hand tools. In The Art of Carving you will learn the basics of carving useful objects with a knife and axe. His beautiful ladles, spatulas and other items are used by many people who want to clean out plastic from their kitchen. In addition to sharing his knowledge of the art of carving, Niklas provides lots of tips on tools (knives, axes, shields) and how to construct your own carving horse and improve your wood cubes. How to gather materials for your carving is an important part, as well as finishing with oil and paint. There is also good advice for those who want to decorate their creations, build a simple shelf or make a bark box.
Niklas Karlsson's blog ahardslojdlife at Hemslöjd magazine has followers all over the world. In early October 2017, his first book THE ART OF WHITTLING was published in the UK. The Swedish edition will be published in January 2018.
Niklas tells us about a personal journey from childhood summers in southern Lapland, growing up in the suburbs of Stockholm, the folk high school years in Västerbotten and the craft school in Stockholm. Today he lives with his family in Hälsingland near Ljusnan, where he likes to sit and camp. But his path has crossed most things to do with wood, from the silver solderings of knife-making to the powerfully worked surfaces of carpentry. He holds classes and workshops, does exhibitions, and on youtube you can watch his craft in instructional videos.
