To use, open the caliper by pulling the legs apart (the spacing nut sits between the legs rather than outside them, which allows this), put it in position and set the spacing nut to the wall thickness. Open the caliper, remove it and measure the tip gap. It is equally good for taking dimensions from almost any oddly shaped object.
