The Veritas flushing chisel is based on a set of antique patternmakers' chisels from the Lee Valley collection. More than just for flush trimming inlay or joinery, it lets you work into corners and extend flat surfaces right up to adjacent surfaces where a plane blade cannot reach. One hand pushes the tool while the other guides the blade along the work, giving fine control with a comfortable grip and a smooth paring action.
The PM-V11 blades are thin, reducing weight and keeping your fingers close to the surface for a tactile connection to the work. Unlike the tapered-pin connector of the original, the interchangeable blades have threaded sockets for a quick, secure connection to the torrefied maple handle, easily disconnected when you want to switch blades. You need only one handle for all blades.
Blades are 5 3/4" long and 1/8" thick; each chisel is roughly 11 3/4" overall with handle. Made in Canada.
There are several good ways to sharpen chisels and plane irons: water stones, diamond stones, oil stones and sharpening machines such as Tormek. All give sharp edges, but they differ in speed, maintenance and price.
A honing guide makes it easier to keep the same angle every time. The most important thing is to find a method you enjoy and use often. The guide helps you choose.
