Large brass center square from Crucible for marking centrelines on square, round and octagonal workpieces, a simple, compact and beautiful tool for an everyday job. It is based on a vintage tool owned by a bodger friend, compact and with a weight and shape that make it feel like a worry stone in the hand.
It is 5-1/2" long and 2-3/8" wide, so it sits nicely in the palm, and is machined from solid brass, weighing about 5.6 oz. The blade carries a machine-engraved, fluid floral pattern created by engraver Jenny Bower and translated into toolpaths by machinist Craig Jackson. The lines are clearly machine-cut but keep the life of her design.
To use it, press the workpiece against the 90° opening on the underside and scribe a pencil or knife line along the blade. Rotate the workpiece and repeat. A smaller steel center square is also available.
