The rule is a small, hardened, precision-ground blade with a satin chrome finish that clamps into a square in place of the standard rule. It is used to check that dovetails are square, so you can spot problems before they show up as gaps in the assembled joint. The ungraduated end is narrow enough to reach into tight London-style dovetails, where the pins are only a kerf wide and standard rules won't fit. The blade is 2 to 4 times longer than vintage versions, helping with thicker stock or gang-cutting 3/4" and thinner panels.
