Designed to be carried in an apron or pocket, the Veritas carpenter's gauge is both a direct-reading compass and a marking gauge, two things carpenters often need but find hard to carry. The rotatable head locks vertically for use and horizontally for storage and tip protection. It reads directly for both radius and diameter, in inches and centimetres.
If you have ever measured a pipe and needed to cut a hole for it, you'll know why direct-setting diameters are an advantage; and if you have ever had to radius a corner, you know why a combination compass and marking gauge is so valuable: set your radius, locate the center with the gauge, then rotate the head and scribe your line with the compass. The direct reading also substantially reduces errors in the cabinet shop.
