Charles H. Hayward (1898-1998) was the most important workshop writer and editor of the 20th century. A trained cabinetmaker and extraordinary illustrator, he was also an excellent designer, writer and photographer. As editor of The Woodworker magazine from 1939 to 1967, he oversaw the craft's shift from almost entirely hand tools to a time when machines were common and inexpensive.

The book is 8.5" × 11", printed in Michigan on uncoated paper, with sewn and glued signatures reinforced with fibre tape and a heavy card cover. It opens flat on the bench. Other volumes: I Tools, II Techniques and IV The Shop & Furniture.
