Our ancestors knew wood and knew how to exploit the inherent properties of each species. They used oak for ships, ash for tool handles, white beech for wooden clubs, spruce for light interior floors, birch for carpentry, rowan for raking sticks, etc.
By using the different senses we are equipped with and by using some different tricks and experience, we can learn to recognize different types of wood, just by studying its surface and structure.
This book first looks at the different characteristics of different types of wood. It then describes the appearance of some 30 different types of wood that grow in the Nordic countries. The book concludes with explanations of terms and a subject index.
