The tool of choice for major stock removal, a scrub is not usually used parallel to the grain, but at an angle of 30° or more. The blade edge is ground with a 3" radius, so it takes an aggressive cut. This is the tool to use to get stock into a condition where you then can use a smooth plane.
The curved cutting edge of the 1 1/2" wide by 3/16" thick blade gives a distinctive, hand-worked texture to the workpiece. This is a single-iron tool, meaning there is no cap iron or chip breaker. Set screws along the side prevent the blade from shifting sideways when it runs into a knot.
This plane comes with a high-carbon steel blade (Rc58-60); a PM-V11 blade (Rc61-63) is also available. Measures 10 3/4" × 2 1/4" and weighs 3 lb. The ductile cast iron body is accurately machined and ground so the sole is flat. A refined yet rugged performer.
Made in Canada.
The Veritas scrub plane has a fairly gentle camber, so the marks it leaves are not very deep. If you want a deeper scrub-planed texture with more pronounced flutes, there are two ways to go:
Use an ordinary plane, such as a Stanley No. 4, and grind the blade to the curve you want. Almost any inexpensive plane will do
Buy a wide flat blade for the Veritas combination plane, such as the 18 mm blade 05P51.48, and regrind it to a tighter radius
That way you decide for yourself how deep and pronounced the texture becomes.
Most products are restocked on an ongoing basis, but delivery times from the manufacturer vary. When an item is out of stock, the button Notify me when available appears on the product page.
Click the button and enter your email address, and we will email you as soon as the item is back in stock. If you are logged in, your email address is registered automatically. If you want to know when the next delivery is expected, you are welcome to contact us.
How often items are restocked depends on the supplier. We receive deliveries from Veritas about once a month, Lie-Nielsen ships in batches and we order from Incra about once a year. You can also add the item to a wishlist in your account, where you can see whether it is in stock.
