The Klingspor SFK 655 hand block is suitable for universal use and gives the right abrasive action regardless of material. The silicon carbide grains are bonded in plastic, giving a much finer surface than other bonds. It is therefore popular for cleaning and finishing, for example the soles of irons and stainless steel sinks, and for removing small rust spots. It works best with water or soap, or with petroleum or pastes.
The plastic bond makes the block elastic, keeping roughness to a minimum with almost no change to the workpiece geometry. Silicon carbide is very hard but brittle, so the grains micro-fracture and stay sharp, and the block can be used until completely worn out.
