The Veritas pullshave is designed for hollowing or recessing an area, for example when shaping and smoothing chair seats. It does the work of both traditional inshaves and travishers.
It is based on a convex spokeshave reconfigured with a large rear handle and a front knob for control and comfort. A machined blade bed, cap iron and lapped blade give chatter-free cuts. Twin thumb wheels set the depth of cut.
Replacement blades in PM-V11 (05P50.72), A2 and O1 are sold separately.
Ductile cast iron body, bubinga handle and front knob. Bed angle 45°. Sole radius 89 mm (3 1/2"). Blade 3.2 mm (1/8") thick, PM-V11. Made in Canada.

Which plane to start with depends on what you will do, but for most people a smoothing plane (No. 4) or a jack plane (No. 5) is a good first choice. The smoothing plane gives smooth surfaces, and the jack plane is a versatile plane for both rough work and truing edges.

Planes of cast iron and steel rust easily, especially in unheated workshops and from moisture on your hands. Wipe the plane after use and protect bare surfaces with a thin layer of wax or oil that will not mark the wood.
Store your planes dry, ideally in a plane sock or box. If rust has already formed, the guide shows how to clean and protect them.
