Somax saw set for setting the teeth of coarser hand saws with 4-8 TPI. Somax saw sets are graduated in TPI (teeth per inch) rather than tooth pitch in mm. This saw set has a 2.2 mm plunger and copes with teeth between 3 and 7 mm (8-4 TPI).

TPI to tooth pitch:
20 tpi = 1.25 mm
12 tpi = 2.1 mm
10 tpi = 2.5 mm
8 tpi = 3.2 mm
7 tpi = 3.6 mm
6 tpi = 4.2 mm
5 tpi = 5.1 mm
4 tpi = 6.4 mm
How to use: unscrew the knurled knob and turn the scaled ring (the anvil onto which the teeth are pressed) until the desired pitch appears as a TPI figure. If your saw has 3 mm teeth, set the ring at 8, because 8 tpi equals 3 mm teeth. Accuracy to decimal fractions is not necessary. For less set, use 10; for more, use 7.
Place the saw set on the teeth at one end of the blade so that the plunger points to the first tooth, and press the grip together. Pressed against the anvil by the plunger, the tooth is set. Do this to every second tooth along the blade, then turn the blade round and set the remaining teeth in the opposite direction.
Do not press the plunger against the scaled ring without a saw inside; the hardened plunger can make ugly notches in the ring. This does not affect function as long as the whole surface is not damaged. Use only light pressure when setting the teeth.
We expect a saw set to work if a bandsaw blade needs its teeth set, especially if it is a fine-toothed blade.
However, bandsaw blades may be too hard for an ordinary saw set, in which case you need a heavier-duty tool made for bandsaw blades. If you are unsure, feel free to contact us before you buy.
Which handsaw to choose depends on the tooth pattern and the number of teeth per inch (tpi). Rip teeth cut along the grain and crosscut teeth across it. Few teeth give fast but rough cuts, and many teeth give slower, cleaner cuts.
Backsaws such as tenon saws and dovetail saws are used for precise joinery. The guide covers tooth patterns, sharpening and choosing a saw.
