The Bridge City UG-1 Universal Gauge is designed for makers who work in a confined space or understand the value of their time. It replaces a whole range of measuring and set-up tools.
This is the right-hand version, with the purple arm on the right. Choose the version opposite to the direction your table saw tilts (viewed from where you stand when cutting): if your saw tilts to the left, choose the right-hand version.
Try square: the UG-1 has two 90° references, one fixed and one using the protractor arm. Both use the reference hook on the back or the magnetic base. The fixed square is accurate to ±0.002" over the length of the 3.5" (90 mm) leg. The 5-5/8" (144.5 mm) protractor leg can be set to 90° and has an offset that lets the 2 mm (0.079") thin edge fit between the teeth of a circular saw blade. It also helps set a drill press table square or at any angle up to 45° with a drill rod blank in the chuck.
Protractor: a laser-etched 45° quadrant with 0.5° resolution; a quarter of a degree is easy to read. Combined with the reference hook it is an efficient layout and set-up tool, with quick reference icons for common angles for polyangular forms.
Dovetails: the protractor arm is quickly set to 6:1 or 8:1 using the quick-set icons.
Bevel: the UG-1 replaces a standard sliding bevel. The blade sits flat on the workpiece for precise transfer of angles, with a two-point locking system.
Depth gauge: measures depths in holes from 6 mm diameter and up to 3" (76 mm) deep, such as mortises, dados, rabbets and holes. It locks via a jammed dovetail slide and is particularly useful for routing, and for precisely offsetting a split fence on a router table or shaper.
Height gauge: for setting the height of saw blades, Jointmaker Pro blades, router bits and shaper cutters. Locks via a jammed dovetail slide.
Marking gauge: set the red indicator at the desired distance from the hook and mark along its bottom edge.
Centering rule: quickly finds the centre of stock up to 5.5" (140 mm) wide. Align the same numbers on both sides of the stock and the 0 mark shows the centre.
The marking gauge has opposing imperial and metric scales, so you quickly learn that 25 mm is about an inch, 12 mm about 1/2" and so on.
The magnetic base is useful when you need both hands for other tasks. The UG-1 is also an ideal Jointmaker Pro accessory for setting blade height, tilt and fence angles. When using the UG-1 flat to set miter gauge and fence angles, a shop-made 4 mm thick piece of wood is recommended to keep the tool parallel with the table.
