Veritas hand strop for putting a final edge on blades or touching them up between sharpenings.
Veritas hand strop for putting a final edge on blades or touching them up between sharpenings. The double-sided strop is deliberately delivered with the leather unattached, so you can attach it as you wish without settling the debate over which side is best for stropping: the smooth (skin) side or the rough (suede) side.
It is CNC-routed from 18 mm Baltic birch plywood with a contoured handle for a comfortable grip. Once mounted, the leather is recessed into the body to reduce debris pick-up when the strop is set down. The 1 3/4" × 9" leather pads can be replaced as needed.
Leather has a natural fine abrasive, so the strop can be used as is. For optimum results, charge one side with a thin layer of Veritas green honing compound, a blend of chromium and aluminium oxide that gives the best combination of cutting speed and fine finish.
There are several good ways to sharpen chisels and plane irons: water stones, diamond stones, oil stones and sharpening machines such as Tormek. All give sharp edges, but they differ in speed, maintenance and price.
A honing guide makes it easier to keep the same angle every time. The most important thing is to find a method you enjoy and use often. The guide helps you choose.
Which water stone you need depends on how dull your edges are and how fine a finish you want. A common setup is a coarse stone around 1000 grit to shape the edge and a fine stone around 5000–8000 grit to polish it. For chipped edges you need a coarser stone too.
Water stones wear unevenly and need flattening regularly. The guide explains grits, brands and flattening.
Most products are restocked on an ongoing basis, but delivery times from the manufacturer vary. When an item is out of stock, the button Notify me when available appears on the product page.
Click the button and enter your email address, and we will email you as soon as the item is back in stock. If you are logged in, your email address is registered automatically. If you want to know when the next delivery is expected, you are welcome to contact us.
How often items are restocked depends on the supplier. We receive deliveries from Veritas about once a month, Lie-Nielsen ships in batches and we order from Incra about once a year. You can also add the item to a wishlist in your account, where you can see whether it is in stock.
