The Sterling plane hammer is made in the USA from brass, stainless steel and North American black walnut. It has two faces: the brass face adjusts plane blades without damaging them, and the wooden face sets the wedge in wooden planes with minimal marking of wedge or plane.
The Sterling plane hammer is made in the USA from brass, stainless steel and North American black walnut. It has two faces: the brass face adjusts plane blades without damaging them, and the wooden face sets the wedge in wooden planes with minimal marking of wedge or plane.
The wooden face is a replaceable spud screwed onto a 5/16"-18 thread in the head; when it becomes too deformed it can be replaced with a new spud from Sterling or one you make yourself. The walnut handle is pressed into the head and cross-pinned; handle and spud are lightly sealed for a tactile feel.
The hammer is designed for adjusting blades in hand planes, not as a joinery mallet, for driving nails or for hard striking. The brass head develops a nice patina with use, which can be removed with a non-abrasive brass cleaner or a Sunshine cloth if you want it to gleam like new.
