The Saddle-Tail was inspired by a layout tool from Christopher Schwarz's personal tool kit, made by Christian Groves of Melbourne, Australia. Chris Kuehn, founder of Sterling Tool Works, used it during a class with Schwarz and was encouraged to bring an improved version to more hand tool woodworkers. The Saddle-Tail became Sterling Tool Works' first product.
