Veritas Small Crosscut Carcass Saw, 16 tpi. The blades of the dovetail saws have 14 or 20 rip-cut teeth per inch. The 14 tpi model is most efficient on stock thicker than 1/2"; the less aggressive cut of the 20 tpi version is best for stock under 1/2" thick.
Veritas dovetail and crosscut saws are an innovative blend of tradition and technology, with the critical characteristics of a classic fine joinery saw but made using modern production processes and materials.
The blades of the dovetail saws have 14 or 20 rip-cut teeth per inch. The 14 tpi model is most efficient on stock thicker than 1/2"; the less aggressive cut of the 20 tpi version is best for stock under 1/2" thick. The teeth, set 0.003" per side, have a rake angle of 14° and an included angle of 60°.
Used for cutting across or perpendicular to the grain, the 16 tpi crosscut saw blade has teeth filed with alternating bevel angles so it severs rather than tears wood fibers; it tracks better and leaves a smoother finish than a rip-cut blade. The teeth are filed with 15° rake and bevel angles and have 0.003" of set per side.
Each saw has a spine molded from an advanced material incorporating stainless-steel powder for weight, glass fiber for stiffness, and a polymer resin binder. An over-molded blade and stainless-steel handle-mounting bolt creates a solid one-piece blade/spine/mount assembly. A single brass fastener secures the bubinga handle. Made of high-carbon steel, the blade of each is 9-1/4" long and 0.020" thick, with a cut depth of about 1-9/16". All three are 14-1/4" long overall. Comfortable, well-balanced saws.

Which handsaw to choose depends on the tooth pattern and the number of teeth per inch (tpi). Rip teeth cut along the grain and crosscut teeth across it. Few teeth give fast but rough cuts, and many teeth give slower, cleaner cuts.
Backsaws such as tenon saws and dovetail saws are used for precise joinery. The guide covers tooth patterns, sharpening and choosing a saw.
