The Lie-Nielsen side clamping honing guide is solidly machined from stainless steel, with a bronze bearing. It features removable jaws: replacement jaws are available for chisels 3/16" and under, tall jaws for mortise chisels, long jaws for very short blades and angled jaws for skew blades. The jaws are designed for Lie-Nielsen blades and chisels, not other makers'. The honing guide comes with the standard pair of jaws.
Jaws:
The Standard Jaws (included with the Honing Guide) fit most Lie-Nielsen plane blades, as well as the 1/4" to 3/4" Bevel Edge Chisels.
The Chisel Jaws fit the Lie-Nielsen 1/8" and 3/16" Bevel Edge Chisels (as well as the 1/4" to 3/4" Bevel Edge Chisels).
The Mortise Chisel Jaws fit all Lie-Nielsen Mortise Chisels, as well as the 1" Bevel Edge Chisel.
The Long Jaws fit blades for all Lie-Nielsen spokeshaves and for the following Lie-Nielsen planes: No. 610, 10-1/4, 041, 042, 073, 1/2, and 85. These jaws are reversible. The short end hones a bevel up to 40° and the long end hones a bevel up to 30°.
The 18° Skewed Jaws fit the No. 140 Skew Block Plane (left or right hand). The blade for the left hand No. 140 fits with the left skewed jaws, and the blade for the right hand No. 140 fits with the right skewed jaws.
The 30° Skewed Jaws fit the No. 98/99 Side Rabbet Planes. The blade for the No. 98 fits the left skewed jaws, and the blade for the No. 99 fits the right skewed jaws.
The distance the blade projects from the front edge of the guide determines the honing angle:
20°: 2-1/16"
25°: 1-1/2"
30°: 1-5/32"
35°: 7/8"
40°: 5/8"
45°: 7/16"
50°: 5/16"
With the Mortise Chisel jaws, add 5°
The Lie-Nielsen honing guide is supplied with the standard jaws, which fit most Lie-Nielsen plane blades and bevel-edge chisels 1/4"–3/4". For other tools there are extra jaws:
Chisel jaws – for 1/8" and 3/16" chisels
Mortise chisel jaws – for all Lie-Nielsen mortise chisels and the 1" chisel
Long jaws – for short blades, such as spokeshaves and the No. 10 1/4, 041, 042, 073 and 85 planes
Skewed jaws 18° and 30° – for skewed blades, such as the No. 140 block plane
The jaws are made for Lie-Nielsen's own blades and chisels and do not always fit other makers' tools.
There are several good ways to sharpen chisels and plane irons: water stones, diamond stones, oil stones and sharpening machines such as Tormek. All give sharp edges, but they differ in speed, maintenance and price.
A honing guide makes it easier to keep the same angle every time. The most important thing is to find a method you enjoy and use often. The guide helps you choose.
A honing guide holds the tool at the right angle to the stone. A side-clamping honing guide grips the tool from the sides and suits chisels and narrow plane irons well. A top-clamping honing guide holds from the top and also handles blades with bevelled sides and unusual shapes.
Both work well, and the choice depends on the tools you have. The guide compares the types.
Most products are restocked on an ongoing basis, but delivery times from the manufacturer vary. When an item is out of stock, the button Notify me when available appears on the product page.
Click the button and enter your email address, and we will email you as soon as the item is back in stock. If you are logged in, your email address is registered automatically. If you want to know when the next delivery is expected, you are welcome to contact us.
How often items are restocked depends on the supplier. We receive deliveries from Veritas about once a month, Lie-Nielsen ships in batches and we order from Incra about once a year. You can also add the item to a wishlist in your account, where you can see whether it is in stock.
